The short story "The Return" is about the "I" narrator who became witness of a crime. A beggar, who was pushed by an old man, fell down on a stone and broke his neck. Four years later the "I" saw the ghost of the dead man walking into a neighbour's house, where the "I"'s girlfriend got her baby. The "I" knew that the beggar was reborn into this child but didn't tell anybody about this, because he thought it also could have been a hallucination. Then again 10 years later the child - which was the reborn beggar - was shooting at bottles on the roof terrace, while the old man was coming out of his house. Then the little child hit one of the bottles, which fell down with a strange noise, and the old man got a shock, slipped and fell down the stairs and broke his neck, too. The next day the "I" saw the beggar coming out of the girl's house and he later was told that the little child was never seen again.
